French Bulldogs Have Tails. One of the most endearing qualities about French Bulldogs are their rumps capped off with a short tail. At birth corkscrew tails look wrapped but are still flexible.
The stumpy tails of the French Bulldog are due to genetics and breeding. While a longer tail would lead to fewer health risks for your pup it would unfortunately take him out of the running as a prize-winning show dog. They are born without long tails instead having small stumpy tails.
Corkscrew tail At birth the corkscrew tail is flexible but has an appearance as wrapped.
The tail is also an essential feature examined by the American Kennel Club to determine the pureness of the French Bulldog. The stumpy tail is a by-product of the early days of breeding. Straight tail At birth straight tails are soft to the touch and taper down to a triangular tip. According to the American Kennel Club AKC a Frenchies tail can be straight or corkscrew-shaped but no matter what shape it is it is naturally short.
